Persistence and patience

I drove over the Bixby Bridge!

Persistence and patience are two things I emphasize in my math classes. Today it was so heartening to see my students who had been persistent in listening use the new formula to solve problems. One girl today told me that she had done the whole assignment and had been able to do the whole assignment by herself. Her eyes were so happy.

It was a bit bittersweet because I know that I won’t be teaching this topic again. It is one of my favorite things to teach. With tons of numbers it looks so hard but I have taken it apart, added my own spin and if you can keep the students with you until they get it, the reaction is magical. Watching one class leaving telling the next one coming in that it is fun and easy is also heartening.

Persistence and patience also apply to my getting ready for retirement and my writing.

I found out that if I get my retirement health insurance as my husband’s spouse will save us $6.22 per month. That’s $73 per year and $730 in 10 years.

But in order to get that benefit I have to do two things: first I have to defer my right to get the insurance on my own, and second I have to get the paperwork to be added as a spouse done, too.

More paperwork is not my friend but to make the savings is worth my time. So, spending about 20 minutes will save me $730 in ten years. I think that’s a rather wonderful hourly rate.

Now for my writing–I am persistent in my desire to write. I know that I also need to be patient. I don’t want to upload a novel that isn’t the best it can be.

So, for now, with the amount of paperwork I’m doing at school my novel writing has to take a back seat. But Thanksgiving is coming up, we are done getting ready for the electrical inspector so my after work time will be a little more open for writing.

What do you need to be persistent with? What are you patient about?

Just Saying.

BTW-If there are any math teachers out there I just taught Cramer’s Rule. I will miss this lesson. It was always fun watching the deer in the headlights change to the aha moment.

The featured image is me driving over the Bixby Bridge without freaking out about the low side barriers. Yay! My own aha moment that I could do it.
